  • London Meeting, Saturday, October 1, 2022

    Speaking this month we have:

1st: David Redford – Around the Horn

A description of two journeys to the Horn of Africa in 2018 and 2019, taking in Ethiopia, Djibouti and Somaliland.Encounters along the way include Lucy, a Chinese railway, one of the lowest places on earth, a camel market, hyena feeding, a Mig fighter and a cheetah sanctuary

David Redford is a retired hospital doctor who has fed his wanderlust by adding independent journeys to visits to low income countries on behalf of NGOs working in the field of maternal health.

2nd: Tharik Hussain – Looking for Muslim Europe

In 2016, following in the footsteps of the 17th century Ottoman traveller, Evliya Celebi, Tharik Hussain and his family went on a road trip across the Western Balkans in search of an indigenous Muslim Europe.

The result is his highly-acclaimed book, Minarets in the Mountains; A Journey into Muslim Europe, which was longlisted for the Baillie Gifford Prize and shortlisted for the Stanford Dolman Travel Award

In this talk, Hussain explains why he had to ‘search’ for a Muslim Europe that has actually been there since the 8th century and in the process helps us better understand why Europe remains so uncomfortable with its Muslim self.

1st Doreen Tayler – Curious Christmas Customs

Boxing Day!  What’s that all about?  And why do we eat turkey and mince pies during the festive season?  If you think we have our funny ways, how about the town where running in your red underwear on New Year’s Day is a custom, or the place where you celebrate the season by pooing?

2nd Matt Bishop and Reece Gilkes, the sidecar guys – Siberia.

They still do all sorts of different 3 wheeled adventures and recently completed a 10 day trip from Seattle to Los Angeles on a Ural motorcycle travelling across the Idaho, Nevada and California Back Country Discovery Route.

They run a sidecar experience centre in the UK and are also the hosts of The Armchair Adventure Festival, a festival based in the UK with the sole focus of celebrating any kind of adventure travel.

    • 2nd: Justyna Hellebrand – Seven Weddings Around the World in Under a Year

Justyna was invited to no less than 7 weddings in 12 months! They took place in Vietnam, South Africa, Poland, Iran, India, United Arab Emirates and Brunei. This gave her a good excuse to visit those countries so she will be sharing with you some of her travels and adventures during that period.

Justyna has been traveling the world extensively since she was 16 and still has not seen it all!

Justyna devoted over 16 years of her life to higher education in various fields and is still planning to study more when the correct opportunity arises.

Justyna has many interests among others: world/folk music, herbalism, origami, beekeeping and in recent years modern art aiming at saving the world from rubbish – making art from all sorts of recycled materials!

Justyna is also a polyglot and fluent in more than 2😀 languages and currently (over the past 10 years 😅) learning Hindi and Turkish.

Justyna treats solo travelling as a distraction from everyday life, not as a form of making money out of her adventurous trips or breaking any world records. With time passing fast she also speeds up her travels and tries to see as much as possible until life comes to an end.

  • Globetrotters Calendar 2023 Competition- Now Open for Entries!

    OPEN for entries!

Enter five images if you send some pictures in before the
    6th August 2022

You are invited to submit your best travel images for consideration to be included in the next Club calendar.

Not to be scuppered by a global pandemic, the search for images for next year’s Club Calendar will go ahead…

All members are invited to submit their best travel pictures for possible inclusion in the 2023 Globetrotters Club Calendar.

As always, there is no limit on the age of the photograph (as many images remain ‘timeless’) so why not trawl through your archive of images of memorable travels gone by and submit a favourite picture to inspire others for when we can travel freely again?

Or maybe you’ve been making pictures where you live or happened to be grounded during lockdown and have seen what is familiar to you in a different light? Remember, one person’s home is another’s travel destination – can you give it a ‘sense of place’?

If you haven’t entered before, why not give it a go this year? If you have submitted pictures in previous years but been unsuccessful so far, do try again – you may have got closer to the shortlist than you think!

The rules are pretty much the same as in previous years – send up to three images that show the beauty of a destination and evoke a feeling of wanderlust, inspiring others to travel.

Entries will be judged anonymously by a panel of judges from the committee – only the editor will know the identity of the photographer until the final images have been chosen. Pictures will only be used for the calendar and in Globetrotters Club publications (Globe magazine, the e-newsletter, the website/social media) to promote the calendar and the Club.

There will shortly be a link on the website to check these rules again and from which to enter directly but alternatively you can email your entries to calendar@globetrotters.co.uk as attachments. Please include your membership number and a short caption that includes where and when the photo was taken.

Please send your pictures as high resolution jpeg files suitable for printing as an A5 image. This is approximately 210mm x 150mm (a 7:5 aspect ratio) and images should be at least 2500 pixels on the longest side.

For uniformity in the design of the calendar, please choose images of an appropriate format – landscape only, portrait will not be considered. Colour only, no B&W please. Square format, 3:2, 4:3 and others may be submitted but they will be judged by the composition you present and their suitability for the calendar once cropped.

The images are printed ‘full bleed’ (to the edges of the paper with no border) so please ensure that any detail included in your composition doesn’t fall towards the edges of your picture – if in doubt, send a slightly wider crop.

The closing date for entries is 19th September 2022, so please make sure that your membership is valid on this day and is kept current until judging has been completed. (You can join/renew easily on the Globetrotters website). All current members will receive a copy of the calendar as part of their membership when it is printed (hopefully in time for the Club meetings before Christmas). Any member whose picture gets used will receive a second copy and additional copies will be available to buy at meetings or by post via the website.

Some tips for getting your image in the calendar… Think about the composition and focal point of the photograph as well as colour and texture. Make sure it’s sharp, straight and appropriately cropped if necessary.

You can submit up to three entries but only one per member may appear in the final publication, though all could be shortlisted for the final stages of judging – perhaps consider a range of subjects…

Although we’re looking for a picture that shows the beauty and appeal of a destination from your point of view, the image should also resonate with a larger audience. And remember – it’s for a calendar – could you look at it and enjoy it each day for a month?!

    Best of luck!
